FOR A BENCH
Urban Performance
Barcelona’s Fontana single Metro exit: A public bench: Rules: When a seat opens, place a flower. No talking. Let the performance emerge.
Fontana, located in the heart of Gràcia, is one of the only metro stops with a single exit. A long series of benches greets its exit. A gathering space is created by the single exit location, Gràcia as a destination neighborhood, and the benches.
The scene is full of distinctive characters: Young lovers meet for dates. Children float about as their families wait for guests. A faded metro guard makes conversation with the station’s shop keeper. Tourists pause for a rest. An old men sits as guardian pigeon- watching, passing the time.
A new character enters the scene. Dressed as a waitress with a tray, stack of napkins and bouquet of daisies, she begins ‘serving’ the bench. A simple algorithm acts as a guide: whenever a seat is free she places first a napkin and then a flower in the empty space. The existing characters react. A temporary surreal environment emerges.
